5/11/07 INTRODUCTION: Asking a first responder to talk about what they fear most in their profession may not be an easy task. In fact, personal pride might cause a person to mask those unpleasant images that often replay within 3 months or sooner after experiencing a life-altering event. No, we don’t like to admit our vulnerability even after some abnormal event may have seriously affected us. After all, we work hard to maintain our composure and show strength in the work we do and the actions we put forth on the front lines. However, something is just not right. I have never felt like this before and now my loved ones at home are becoming visibly affected by my vocal mood swings that erupt with little warning. 2/28/07 INTRODUCTION: Too often, responding firefighters die before they reach a destination because they were not belted-in/restrained after a crash with another vehicle. Just recently a fire engine on emergency response was turning onto West 14th Street from West Grand Boulevard at about 6:30 pm when it was struck by a speeding SUV traveling at a high rate of speed. Tragically in Detroit, Michigan, the fire engine's driver would be thrown through the windshield; and then rolled over by the driverless fire apparatus. The company officer would also be ejected through the windshield and hospitalized with critical injuries. 1/29/07 3:59:00 PM The Angione Report: Promotion Exam Wars 1/1/07 INTRODUCTION: How do we tell a grieving firefighter family who lost a loved one in the line of duty, that he or she died in circumstances that could have been prevented? One can only imagine the long-term suffering that this message would pass on to the surviving family. Fire service leaders at a 2004 Florida Firefighter Life-Safety Summit in Tampa, Florida, boldly called for a fire service cultural change. While emphasizing that we can no longer tolerate the loss of 100 or more firefighters each year, and unsafe acts must stop. It all fits into a national debate with a unified voice that stresses we have to convince everyone in the fire service a line of duty death is not a standard expectation or an acceptable outcome. 12/26/06 My city seems to have more than its share of car fires. I would say that about half are deliberately set. When a car is going from stem to stern, and particularly if it is burning in both the engine and passenger compartments upon arrival, look for the gasoline pattern. Arson is a pretty good bet. >> More Opinions PRODUCT RECALLS Children's Metal Jewelry Recall 5/31/07 7:22:00 PM Diving Regulator Components Recall 5/31/07 7:17:00 PM Royal Products Recalls Pine Cone Candles 5/31/07 7:13:00 PM Toy Drums Recalled By The Boyds Collection Ltd. 5/30/07 10:22:00 PM KTM Off Road Motorcycles Recalled Due To Fuel Leak 5/24/07 5:21:00 PM >> More Recalls |
